It had recently announced a pause in work on its Wolverhampton site and the council subsequently met with Tesco executives to stress the importance of the development, both to Wolverhampton and Tesco itself.

Councillor Roger Lawrence, Leader of Wolverhampton City Council, said: "We are pleased that Tesco has confirmed its commitment to develop a store at the Royal Hospital site.

"We met with Tesco executives last month and put forward a strong argument for the continuation of the scheme in Wolverhampton, and we will continue to work closely with Tesco as it brings forward this important project.

"This is a major private sector-led regeneration project to Wolverhampton which will create hundreds of new jobs and play an important part of the wider plans to revitalise the city centre and surrounding areas."

Chris Bush, UK Managing Director, said: "I'm pleased to have confirmed to Pat McFadden MP and the council that Tesco remains committed to the Royal Hospital site.

"I understand the importance of this project to the local community and look forward to regenerating this key site in Wolverhampton. Our new store will open in early 2016, creating hundreds of jobs and will provide a great shopping experience for local people."
