Residents are being urged to return their voter registration forms as soon as possible - and help save taxpayers' cash by confirming their details online or over the phone.

Electoral registration forms have been delivered to more than 111,000 properties across the city, with the last few landing on doormats over the weekend.

The forms are used to compile the electoral register, which has to be updated annually.

Wolverhampton City Council's Electoral Services Manager David Garner said: "It is important that people complete and return their registration forms as soon as possible so that they are able to take part in the local council and European Parliament elections on 22 May, 2014.

"Registering to vote is very simple. All they have to do is check that the information contained on the forms includes everyone in their household who is eligible to vote, and amend and update it if necessary."

If no changes to the form are required, people can confirm their details - and request a postal vote and opt out of the Edited Register - by logging on to the Type=links;Linkid=2649;Title=Registration Service;Target=_blank; or calling free on 0800 197 3646 using the security codes printed on the form. If additions or changes are required, people should complete the form and send it back in the freepost envelope supplied.

David said: "Wherever possible, I'd urge people to confirm their details over the phone or online.

"It's not only quick and easy for residents but it also saves council taxpayers around 16p per form because the council doesn't need to pay for postage.

"Already nearly 11,000 households have confirmed their details over the phone or online, compared to just 8,000 by the same stage last year - and this has saved council taxpayers more than £1,700.

"People who have not confirmed or returned forms yet can help save taxpayers even more money by registering their details as quickly as they can, as that will mean we won't need to send them reminders later this year."

Householders who have either mislaid or haven't received their electoral registration form should look out for the reminders being delivered from 8 November, 2013.
