Information on child naming ceremonies and the renewal of marriage vows

Naming Ceremonies

A naming ceremony is a way of celebrating the birth of your baby and welcoming the new arrival into your family. The child/children can be of any age.

Who can have a ceremony?

The parents, legal guardians or anyone holding parental responsibility may arrange a ceremony. This is regardless of:

  • marital status
  • cultural or religious beliefs

Please note the ceremony does not have any legal standing.

Reason to have a ceremony

It is a personalised way of pledging your parental commitment to the child before your family and friends.

It can also be a way of welcoming stepchildren or adoptive children into a new family.

About your ceremony

You may also include other adult friends and relatives to acknowledge their special relationship with the child/children.

You can include celebratory certificates for:

  • parents
  • grandparents
  • supporting adults

Certificates are signed by them and the registrar.

Renewal of Marriage Vows

Couples can choose to renew their marriage vows in a special event held for family and friends

Who can have a ceremony?

Any married couple can arrange a Renewal of Marriage Vows Ceremony. You can be of any age and married for any length of time.

It does not matter if you do not live in the area where you want your ceremony.

Reason to have a ceremony

These ceremonies are appropriate for a couple at any stage of married life. They can be a means of celebrating a special anniversary such as your Silver Wedding (25th).

Some couples who get married abroad choose to renew their marriage vows back at home.

About your ceremony

Special people in your lives can take part in your ceremony. This includes your children, guests who were at the wedding and any friends and relatives. You will also need to ask two people to witness the signing of the certificate of the event.

A 'celebrant' will conduct your ceremony. They will not be acting in any official capacity, even if they also work as a registrar. Celebrants are trained and experienced in conducting many different ceremonies. You can ask their advice on anything you are unsure about.
