Pupils in Wolverhampton will be challenged to eat a rainbow during Healthy Eating Week.

The City of Wolverhampton Council's Catering Service is laying on a special menu in primary, infant and junior schools from next Monday to Friday, 13 to 17 June, 2016, with pupils encouraged to try different coloured fruit and vegetables every day.

On the Monday, they will enjoy red food, including extra servings of red peppers, cherry tomatoes, watermelon chunks, strawberries, red grapes, cherries and raspberries, while on Tuesday the yellow selection includes baby corn, yellow peppers, pineapple, honeydew melon and bananas.

Wednesday is green food, with green peppers, cucumber, curly endive, green grapes, sugar snap peas and watercress on offer, followed by an orange selection on Thursday including orange peppers, cantaloupe melon, peaches and satsumas.

On Friday, they will enjoy an array food of different colours including those representing the missing colours of the rainbow, such as blueberries and beetroot.

Councillor Peter Bilson, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for City Assets, said: "As part of Healthy Eating Week we are giving our young people the chance to try different fruit and vegetables and eat a rainbow of colours.

"It's a great opportunity for them to expand their diet and enjoy some types of food that may not ordinarily be served up at home or school."

Healthy Eating Week is organised by the British Nutrition Foundation, and aims to promote healthy eating and drinking, being active, food provenance and cooking in school. For more details, please visit Type=links;Linkid=7264;Title=Food a fact of life;Target=_blank;.

The Catering Service prepares tens of thousands of hot lunches for children and young people in Wolverhampton every week.

The menus have been developed with help from pupils, parents and school catering staff, and offer plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables as well as popular favourites such as roast dinners, pizza, sausage and mash and hot puddings.

There are also vegetarian options every day, while dishes for special diets can be prepared by prior arrangement. In addition, secondary school pupils can choose from a range of light bites and sandwiches, cakes and drinks.

All infant aged pupils in Wolverhampton - those in Reception and Year 1 and Year 2 - are eligible for a free lunch thanks to the Government's Universal Infant Free School Meals scheme. Many children and young people in Years 3 and above - and nursery aged children receiving full time education - also receive free school meals if their families meet eligibility requirements.
