More than 200 new homes are to be built in Wolverhampton as part of a major development in the city.

Wolverhampton City Council has appointed Taylor Wimpey as the developer for the former Jennie Lee Centre site in Wednesfield.

The site of the former council owned office and training facility is set to be redeveloped for 2, 3and 4 bedroom homes, including apartments and family housing for sale and rent.

A proportion of the properties that are built will be affordable housing to help buyers to get on to the property ladder.

In addition to the housing, a number of environmental improvements will also be made including the creation of a large area of open space for residents, enhancing the canal towpath and implementing road safety measures.

The grass pitches and the synthetic surface on the site are all being re-provided at other locations within the city as part of the wider Wolverhampton Sport Development and Investment Strategy.

Outline planning permission has already been granted for the development and Taylor Wimpey will be submitting a reserved matters planning application later this summer. Prior to this, the leading house builder is hosting a public consultation event on Wednesday 3 July, 2013 to give people the chance to find out more and comment on the proposed scheme.

Councillor Peter Bilson, Wolverhampton City Council's Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration and Prosperity, said: "We are delighted to announce Taylor Wimpey has been signed up to redevelop this site.

"The creation of more new housing in Wolverhampton, especially affordable properties, is one of our top priorities and this development will certainly help us achieve that.

"It is also very pleasing that the whole area will also benefit from a number of environmental enhancements as part of this scheme."

Ken Phillips, Land and Planning Director for Taylor Wimpey North Midlands, added: "We are pleased to be working in partnership with Wolverhampton City Council to provide a high-quality development of much-needed new homes in the Wednesfield area.

"Before we submit our reserved matters planning application, we are holding a public consultation event to give local people the chance to find out more about our proposals and influence the final design of the scheme by providing their feedback.

"This public exhibition is taking place on Wednesday 3 July, 2013 at St Chad's Church Community Centre in Stubby Lane, Wednesfield, from 2pm and 8pm, and all are welcome to attend."

Work is anticipated to start to start in October this year, subject to Taylor Wimpey obtaining planning permission for the proposed scheme.
