Plans to create a new primary school by merging Springdale Infant and Junior Schools have been approved by the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet.

Springdale Primary School will be in operation from 1 January, 2018 and will cater for pupils aged between 3 and 11 years. The Governing Boards of the infant and junior schools federated in July 2017.

The City of Wolverhampton Council proposed the merger of the two schools to help further raise standards. Springdale Junior School is rated "Good" by Ofsted but Springdale Infant School was inspected by Ofsted in February 2017 and found to "Require Improvement".

Councillor Claire Darke, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for Education, said: "The council has been working closely with Springdale Infant School to improve standards of education and the outcomes for pupils in recent months, and this formal merger with the Good rated junior school will further support this process.

"The levels of continuity, consistency and progression will be maximised by the schools becoming a unified primary school, delivering the best possible learning environment for its pupils."

The potential merger of the schools was received positively during a period of consultation, with 82% of respondents in favour of the move and 15% not expressing an opinion either way.

All pupils on roll and all staff employed at Springdale Infant School and Springdale Junior School as of the end of December will automatically transfer to the primary school on 1 January, 2018.
