A free family fun run will be taking place in East Park next weekend – and organisers would love to hear from anyone interested in helping to establish a weekly parkrun in the area.

The 5k family fun run will be held on Saturday 13 April starting at 10.30am, with people of all ages and abilities invited to come along and have a go.

The route will be fully marshalled, light refreshments will be available and everyone who takes part will receive a free reusable water bottle courtesy of WV Active which they will be able to fill up with fresh water from any of the Refill points at selected businesses, restaurants, cafes and pubs around the city.

The fun run has been organised by a group of local volunteers including representatives from Wolverhampton parkrun, Wednesfield Junior parkrun, parkrun UK and Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletics Club, and will also be used to assess support for the possible establishment of a weekly parkrun at East Park.

Parkrun is a volunteer led initiative of free 5km timed runs around the country and internationally, which aims to have an event in every community that wants one.

Organisers of the fun run on 13 April are keen to hear from anyone who would be interested in forming a core team to establish a weekly parkrun at East Park. This would join the popular Wolverhampton parkrun at West Park on Saturdays for people of all ages (children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult) and the Wednesfield Junior parkrun for children aged between 4 and 14 on Sundays.

Martha Cummings, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Voluntary Sector Co-ordinator, said: "Like parkrun, this fun run will be a great opportunity for individuals and families to enjoy the park; everyone can join in and go as fast or as steady as they want to, whether they run, jog or walk.

"We hope the event will bring people together who not only want to take part, but also potential volunteers who would like to set up a weekly parkrun in East Park with the support of parkrun UK. We know how popular the existing parkruns at West Park and Wednesfield are – there were over 500 people at West Park on Saturday morning – and so we'd be delighted to hear from anyone who would like to be involved in bringing another new event to the city.”

People who would like to see the establishment of a new parkrun are also encouraged to complete a short survey at East Park Weekly parkrun to help gauge interest.
