The City of Wolverhampton Council has been shortlisted for 6 awards at the National Learning Disability and Autism Awards, taking place this Friday night.

It is in the running for awards in the Employer, Manager, Breaking Down Barriers, Sporting Chance, Disabilities and Employer of People with a Disability categories.

The National Learning Disabilities and Autism Awards, organised by Care Talk magazine, celebrate excellence in the support for people with learning disabilities and recognises those individuals or organisations who excel in providing quality care.

Councillor Sandra Samuels OBE, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for Adult Services, said: "The fact that the council has been shortlisted in 6 categories at this prestigious awards ceremony reflects well on the way we have transformed the services and support we provide for people with a learning disability over the last few years.

"This transformational service change has increased personal choice, community inclusion, accessibility and employment outcomes for people, resulting in life changing and life enhancing experiences for many people.

"The nominations are also a reflection of the commitment to deliver which is shown day in, day out, by staff members and their teams, and I am very proud of them."

The nominations recognise the hard work of individuals and teams, as well as a wide range of initiatives including the City of Wolverhampton Council's Community Pathways service, which has become a 'go to' for people who want to maximise their independence, the Supported Employment Service which matches up local employers with potential employees, and SupportPlus and CityLinks which form Wolverhampton's new day opportunities provision.

National Learning Disabilities and Autism Awards has a total of 21 categories, representing all areas of care for people with learning disabilities and autism within the care sector, including supporting people in their own homes, the residential care sector or the voluntary sectors.

The awards ceremony takes place at the ICC in Birmingham on Friday night.
