City of Wolverhampton Council will reopen its Anchor Lane Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) this week.

The Lanesfield site will reopen 7 days a week from 10am this Friday (15 May).

However, the council has urged residents only to make essential trips to the HWRC which means taking items that cannot be safely stored at home.

Residents have also been told not to visit the site if they, or members of their household, are showing any symptoms of coronavirus and that a strict social distancing policy will be in operation to ensure the safety of visitors and staff.

Residents have also been warned of potential lengthy traffic queues at the site and will require 2 forms of ID to gain access.

Councillor Steve Evans, Cabinet Member for City Environment at City of Wolverhampton Council, said: “We’re expecting lots of people to visit the HWRC. However, we’re urging residents to only make the journey if it’s absolutely essential which means disposing of items that can’t safely be stored at home.

“We’ve seen long waiting times and lengthy queues of traffic at other sites which have reopened across the region. I’m sure it will be no different in Wolverhampton so we’re asking people to be patient and think about whether or not they really need to make the journey.

“Staff will guide people through the site as safely and as quickly as possible. We ask everyone to carefully follow the instructions and adhere to social distancing guidelines.”

A maximum of 2 people per vehicle will be allowed onto the site - no vans or trailers. Visitors will need to produce a household bill and photo ID to show they are a Wolverhampton or Dudley resident to gain access. Items that will not be accepted include oils, paint and chemicals.

The council is taking a phased approach to reopening its 2 city HWRCs. Traffic and social distancing measures will be assessed at the Anchor Lane site before Shaw Road HWRC is reopened in the coming weeks.

Shaw Road HWRC is situated by the Showell Road COVID-19 testing centre. The council wants to ensure key workers are not prevented from getting tested due to traffic congestion.

Opening times for both sites are:

  • Monday: 10am to 6pm
  • Tuesday: 10am to 6pm
  • Wednesday: 10am to 6pm
  • Thursday: 10am to 8pm (late night opening)
  • Friday: 10am to 6pm
  • Saturday: 10am to 4pm
  • Sunday: 10am to 4pm
