Wolverhampton’s first phase of BP Chargemasters have been installed to encourage more electric vehicles in the city.

Phase 1 of the project identified 6 key locations across the city for the new BP ‘Chargemaster’ charging points to be installed. The new charging points can be found at:

  • Birch Street
  • Clifton Street car park
  • Market Street
  • Park Road West
  • Princess Street taxi rank
  • Red Hill Street

The first BP Chargemaster went live yesterday and is in full operation at Clifton Street car park in Chapel Ash.

Drivers can pay for their charge via the Polar network and accept contactless payments.

The introduction of electric cars in the city will have significant environmental benefits such as a reduction in vehicles’ exhaust emissions to help improve air quality, reduced carbon emissions, and a reduction in traffic noise.

Councillor Steve Evans, Cabinet Member for City Environment at City of Wolverhampton Council said: “I’m pleased to see work underway in preparation for the increasing demand in electric vehicles.

“The move towards electric vehicles will improve air quality, reduce noise on our roads and benefit public health.

“The new charging points will also inevitably attract more drivers to visit, live and work in Wolverhampton and will therefore benefit the local economy.”

Councillor Barbara McGarrity, Champion for Climate Change at City of Wolverhampton Council said: “This is a move in the right direction to support our commitment to tackle climate change.

“Electric vehicles are much cleaner for the environment and hopefully with more charging points in place, this will encourage more green drivers to visit our city.”

The remaining charging points will be operational by the end of the month.

Now phase 1 is complete, the city council is working to identify further key locations to install additional charging points across the city.
