There are less than 2 weeks to go until the end of Wolverhampton's popular Beat the Street competition - and the race is on to clock up enough miles to reach the moon!

The walking, cycling and running game began on Wednesday 24 February, 2016, and since then participants have covered a fantastic 160,000 miles. The competition ends on Wednesday 13 April, 2016, so there is still time to walk the distance to the moon - approximately 238,000 miles.

Ros Jervis, Wolverhampton's Director of Public Health, said: "Beat the Street has been hugely popular with the thousands of people who are playing the game, and the health benefits of the city collectively walking 160,000 miles over the last five weeks are immense.

"We said at the start of the game that it would be fantastic if we could walk, cycle or run enough miles to get all the way to the moon, and with one last push, we can still make it.

"So I would urge everyone to keep up the good work, get out and about and enjoy the lighter evenings and warmer weather, and carry on clocking up the miles.

"Now is also the time to explore new walking routes which will take you past extra Beat Boxes - remember that every point and every mile counts, and there are great prizes for the teams that travel the furthest."

To boost point tallies, there are bonus points on offer at forthcoming events around Wolverhampton. There will be:

  • a special temporary Beat Box at the Wednesfield junior parkrun on Sunday (3 April) at 9am. Young people are encouraged to register in advance at Type=links;Linkid=6523;Title=Wednesfield Junior Parkrun;Target=_blank;. Parents can also walk or run the 2km route via Beat Box 57 in the park and then tap a special Beat Box which Beat the Street engagement manager Clare Williams will be holding for triple points

  • there are also double points and the chance to win one Junior Gym membership by tapping Beat Box 90 in Low Hill on Monday 4 April, Beat Box 156 in Heath Town Park on Wednesday, 6 April and Beat Box 1 in East Park on Thursday 7 April

  • finally, players can score triple points by locating the golden Beat Box which will be in a mystery location from Friday 8 April to Sunday 10 April - clues as to its location will be available via Beat the Street's Type=links;Linkid=6828;Title=Facebook;Target=_blank; and Type=links;Linkid=6829;Title=Twitter;Target=_blank; pages.  Anyone who taps this box will also be entered into a prize draw to win an executive suite for a Wolves home match next season

In order to score extra points and be entered into prize draws where applicable, players should ensure they tap another beat box before tapping one of the special boxes listed above.
