Principal contractor, Eurovia, have now delivered the first two phases of the council’s multi-million-pound city centre transformation. The new investment will create new event spaces, improve public realm and support businesses.

Creating safer pedestrianised zones

The public realm improvements in the Victoria Street and North Street areas of the city centre are now complete, with new road layouts, entry and exit rising bollards and pedestrian/cycle zones. The new road layouts improve pedestrian safety, provide a platform for city events and outdoor seating, and support local businesses and the re-opening of The Halls Wolverhampton.

The first phase is in the west of the city centre, across Victoria Street, Salop Street, Bell Street and Worcester Street, to support the Council’s events programme. The scheme will help to boost the city centre economy.

It is envisaged the works will also unlock a wider package of investment, creating hundreds of new jobs, the opportunity to deliver hundreds of new city centre homes, a hotel and public space improvements.

Another phase has seen the transformation of the street scene outside The Halls Wolverhampton. This includes moving the North Street carriageway closer to the Civic Centre, a new cycle route through North Street while Mitre Fold has become a pedestrianised zone with access for deliveries only. A new link road has been created between Paternoster Row and North Street to help traffic flow around the halls.

Scheme overview, both phases:

  • Improved routes between new developments and the city centre
  • New public spaces and entertainment squares to support future public events
  • Environmental improvements including new trees and landscaping
  • Installation of new cycle lanes to connect existing cycle routes together
  • New pedestrianised areas with reduced traffic flows
