A wide range of activities for the over 60s are now available at the City of Wolverhampton Council's WV Active leisure centres.

They include swimming, bowls, short tennis, table tennis and racket sports. There is also a 60+ session gym at the Home Straight gym at WV Active Aldersley on Thursdays from 9.30am to 11am.

WV Active offers a concessionary membership rate of just £11.50 per month for anyone aged 60 and over, offering unlimited access to its 3 sites - WV Active Aldersley, WV Active Bilston-Bert Williams and WV Active Central. There is also a pay as you go option of £3.50 per session.

Councillor Jasbir Jaspal, the council's Cabinet Member for Adults and Wellbeing, said: "Regular physical activity is one of the most important things older people can do to help maintain and improve their health and wellbeing.

"It can help and manage many of the health problems that often come with age, including reducing the risk of falls through improving strength and balance, enhancing cognitive function, and boosting mood.

"We are delighted to be able to offer an extensive programme of activities for the over 60s at WV Active and I would encourage people to find out more and sign up today."

Wolverhampton currently has low levels of physical activity in older adults – data shows that nearly a third of adults in the city are classed as inactive, doing less than 30 minutes of activity a week, increasing to over 40% of those aged 65 and over.

To help tackle this, the council recently appointed a new Active Ageing Coordinator to help older adults get moving.

Jessica Savage, whose role has been funded by Black Country Integrated Care Board, will play an integral part in increasing opportunities for older adults to be active in Wolverhampton.

She is working with WV Active and other stakeholders to enhance the current provision at the leisure centres, while also exploring chances to implement city wide opportunities for residents to move more.
