Figures published recently show that 78% of Year 6 pupils in the City reached the required standard in writing in 2017, two percentage points above the national average and the joint highest in the West Midlands.
At the same time, 20% of Wolverhampton pupils were found to be writing at greater depth, again two percentage points above the national average and the second highest in the region. The proportion of pupils writing at greater depth was also up seven percentage points year on year, the eighth best improvement among all local authorities in England.
Meanwhile, the progress Wolverhampton pupils made in writing between Key Stages 1 and 2 was not only the best in the West Midlands last year, but also 10th among all local authorities nationally. In reading and mathematics, progress by local pupils was in the top 25% and top 30% nationally respectively.
Councillor Claire Darke, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for Education, said: "Once again our Year 6 pupils have performed exceptionally well at Key Stage 2, and I'd like to congratulate teachers, pupils and parents on this splendid achievement.
"These are results that we as a City should be very proud of, and which will set pupils up very well for life at secondary school.
"Their success is a reflection of the hard work put in by all our schools, and of the exceptional specialist support provided to them by the City of Wolverhampton Council's School Improvement Team.
"This partnership is best demonstrated in the Key Stage 2 results for writing, where we have been working with a number of local schools to provide specialist training and support, enabling pupils to reach and exceed national standards.
"We will look to build upon this success in the year ahead by ensuring that even more of our young people are able to reach the required standard in writing, reading and mathematics."
The improvement in outcomes for pupils is replicated in rising school standards in the City of Wolverhampton, with 89% of local schools now rated either Good or Outstanding by Ofsted, the highest ever.
