The Swimathon is taking place at more than 600 pools around the country, including the Bert Williams Leisure Centre in Bilston on Sunday 23 March, 2014.

The Swimathon is the UK's biggest fundraising swimming event with thousands of people set to jump into pools around the country. Those taking part can choose from 1.5 kilometres, 2.5km or 5km distances, while those who prefer a team challenge are invited to form a relay squad to tackle either 1.5km or 5km.

Councillor Elias Mattu, Wolverhampton City Council's Cabinet Member for Leisure and Communities, said: "This is a great opportunity for people to get in the pool, either on their own or with family and friends, and complete a swimming challenge of their choice. At the same time, they'll be raising vital funds for Sport Relief which will be able to help people living incredibly tough lives, both here in the UK and around the world."

The Sainsbury's Sport Relief Swimathon is being backed by Olympic gold medallist and Swimathon President Duncan Goodhew MBE and four time Paralympic gold medallist Ellie Simmonds OBE. She said: "I'd encourage people to take the plunge and make every length count by being sponsored to take on a challenge and do their bit for Sport Relief."

Swimming instructor Chris Peake, who is organising the event at the Bert Williams Leisure Centre, added: "The Sainsbury's Sport Relief Swimathon is a fantastic way to bring our community together, while providing ample opportunity to get fit and healthy in the pool."
