People all over Europe will be marking the wide variety of languages spoken across the continent this weekend.

And as part of the European Day of Languages celebrations on Saturday (26 September, 2015), Wolverhampton's Adult Education Service will be staging a free event of its own.

It is offering free bite size taster sessions for people interested in learning a new language, with Languages staff on hand at Old Hall Street between 10am and 1pm.

They will also be highlighting the wide range of language based courses offered by the Adult Education Service, including the European funded Italian work placement programme, Erasmus Plus.

A total of 20 places are available this year for local people looking to spend a number of weeks on a work placement in Italy through Erasmus Plus, learning about Italian language and culture in the process.

Over the last year, 22 students took up the opportunity to gain work experience in Italy as part of the Erasmus Plus programme, with seven having just returned to Wolverhampton after spending the summer on a work placement there.

During that time, they gained valuable experience in beauty salons, the fashion industry, information centres, schools, restaurants, hotels and leisure centres while also soaking up Italian culture.

One of them, Ben McMurchie aged 22, said: "It was a fantastic experience. I learned so much and I'm now even thinking about a future working in Italy."

Councillor Claire Darke, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for Education, said: "Wolverhampton Adult Education Service offers a wide range of courses for people wishing to try out a new language or brush up on rusty skills, from absolute beginners through to advanced levels.

"If you want to find out more, staff will be on hand this Saturday to get you started on your language learning journey."
