Young people who have taken up a new sport or physical activity enjoyed a celebration evening to mark the end of a special programme.

More than 40 children and young people tried their hand at street dance, basketball and wheelchair basketball during the programme run at Gloucester Street Community Centre.

Organised by Whitmore Reans Local Neighbourhood Partnership and funded by Wolverhampton City Primary Care Trust, it aimed to help address the need for more young people to get involved in physical activity and improve their skills, abilities and confidence at the same time.

Marcia Williams, of Gloucester Street Community Centre, said: "This 10-week course has been very successful in improving young people's engagement in sport.

"The basketball has been most popular with both able bodied and disabled young people and we have seen increased levels of good-spirited competition which has been a pleasure to watch."

Peter Holmes MBE, chairman of Wolverhampton Sports Advisory Council, added: "I have been impressed with the interest shown in the sport by young people. We have had a regular attendance of over 40 people per session from the local area, highlighting the need for more activities such as this in the future."
