Residents and businesses in Heath Town are set to be consulted on a proposed scheme to ease parking pressures put on their roads by activity at nearby New Cross Hospital.

The plan is to put in place a permit system, which affected residents and business would be charged £20 a year for - less than 6 pence a day.

The scheme would also see sections of pay and display parking installed, which permit holders would be able to use without charge.

Residents and businesses will shortly receive a letter and questionnaire asking them to indicate if they are in favour of the scheme or not.

For the scheme to come into force it requires a minimum of a 60% response to the questionnaire, with 85% of responders being in favour of a residents parking scheme.

Councillor Steve Evans, Cabinet Member for City Environment, said: "For many years Heath Town residents and businesses in close proximity to New Cross Hospital have been severely affected by the parking associated with the hospital.

"We are responding to their concerns and hope they consider this scheme a viable solution.

"I would urge as many residents and businesses to read the detail of the scheme and respond to the questionnaire."

It is proposed to implement the scheme in phases:

Phase 1: Wolverhampton Road (between Church St and Coronation Road), Wolverhampton Road (between Graiseley Lane and Rookery Bridge, and Wolverhampton Road (service road to numbers 288 - 350), Graiseley Lane (Wolverhampton Road to Victoria Road), New Cross Avenue
Coronation Road, Ryton Close, Bates Green, Lawrence Avenue.

Phase 2: Graiseley Lane area.

Phase 3: Remainder of identified area (Bushbury Road).

The Pay & Display would operate daily from 7 am to 8 pm to reflect the main operational hours of the hospital and charges would be set in relation to hospital levies.

The proposed on street parking charges are:

  • 15 minutes free
  • Up to 1 hour £1.00
  • Up to 2 hours £2.00
  • Up to 4 hours £4.00

Blue badge holders - no charge with a maximum stay of 3 hours.

The charges currently being levied on the New Cross Hospital site are:

  • Up to 1 hour £2.00
