The autumn term may have only just started, but parents of pupils in Year 6 are being encouraged to start thinking now about their child's secondary school place.

Over the next few weeks, all secondary schools in Wolverhampton will be providing parents and children with numerous opportunities to see what's on offer before they express a preference.

Wolverhampton has 17 secondary schools, providing a diverse array of education opportunities.

Councillor Phil Page, Wolverhampton City Council's Cabinet Member for Schools, Skills and Learning, said: "If your child has recently started their final year at primary or junior school, now is the time to start thinking about their secondary school place for September 2015.

"That may seem a long way off, but it's important to remember that the closing date for applications for secondary school places is a little over 6 weeks away.

"The choice you will soon be making is one of the most important decisions you will make for your child's future."

"All Wolverhampton's secondary schools are holding open days and open evenings over the coming weeks, and I'd urge parents to see for themselves the facilities on offer and then highlight their preferences before the deadline of 31 October, 2014."

Details of the open days and open evenings can be found by contacting secondary schools directly. Should any of these times prove difficult, it may be possible to make an appointment with headteachers for parents or guardians to visit at a mutually convenient time.

Parents or guardians can apply for their choice of secondary school online at Type=articles;Articleid=2548;Title=School admissions;. The closing date for applications is 31 October, 2014.

Parents or guardians who apply online will be notified of their child's allocated school place on 2 March, 2015.

Councillor Page added: "Wolverhampton's secondary schools have undergone a major transformation in recent years.

"We've invested £270 million in new and refurbished accommodation through the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme which will be completed by next September.

"This has provided 21st century learning environments that young people can be proud of, and I'm sure parents will be really impressed by what they see."
