Planning chiefs have given the green light for the first new council homes to be built in Wolverhampton for 30 years.

Wolverhampton City Council's Planning Committee approved the proposals by Kier Partnership Homes to create a total of 120 homes on Thompson Avenue. Of these a third, 40 in number, will be council homes - the first to be built in the city since the 1980s.

The overall development will see a mixture of properties across the 7 acre site, ranging from bungalows to four bedroom properties.

These properties are part of wider plans to regenerate the city and increase the number of decent and affordable homes in Wolverhampton.

Councillor Peter Bilson, Wolverhampton City Council's Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration and Prosperity, said: "I am delighted that this exciting development has been granted planning permission.

"This is a historic milestone that will see the first council houses built in Wolverhampton for 3 decades.

"Increasing the number of decent and affordable homes in the city is one of our key priorities and this unique development will certainly help us achieve that."

Chris King, managing director of Kier Partnership Homes, added "We are pleased to have been given approval from the Planning Committee. Our partnership approach has meant that we were able to understand the client's needs, and provide high quality, sustainably designed homes for the development. We are proud to be working alongside Wolverhampton City Council to provide these much needed homes."

Kier Partnership Homes will be starting their initial site investigation works in the near future prior to getting the development started.
