Wolverhampton City Council has announced that green bin garden waste collections will stop over the winter months as the authority continues to manage huge funding cuts from Central Government.

The need to make £123 million of savings coupled with the fact the amount of waste people put in their green bins drops dramatically over the winter has led the council to conclude it is no longer sustainable to keep the service going between December 1 and March 27.

The move will save around £80,000 a year.

The collection of garden waste is not a statutory service and many other councils - including Walsall and Dudley - do not provide a winter collection service.

Around 87% of green waste from Wolverhampton is collected over spring, summer and early autumn.

Councillor John Reynolds, Wolverhampton City Council's cabinet member for city services, said: "People are aware that huge Government cuts are forcing us to make difficult decisions that we'd rather not have to do.

"We have to make savings across the council and because use of the green bins drops so dramatically over winter, we've reluctantly decided to stop the service between December and March.

"People will still be able to take their garden waste to our 2 household waste and recycling centres at Shaw Road and Anchor Lane through the winter.

"We would also encourage more households to compost their garden waste and we have an arrangement with a provider of home composters to give Wolverhampton residents some excellent deals on reduced price compost bins."

Green bin collections currently take place fortnightly and collections will stop from the week commencing December 1. They will restart in the week commencing March 30.

The council's waste and recycling partner Amey will soon be delivering the annual calendars to all households which contain collection dates for the year ahead. These will contain information about when people's exact final green bin collection dates will be and when they will restart.
