The libraries in the city, together with their partners in the Black Country, secured £10,000 from the National Lottery Arts Council Libraries Fund to stage a series of children's activities during the summer holiday, enabling authors, storytellers, illustrators and poets to come to venues around the city.

The programme forms part of this year's Summer Reading Challenge, and included a visit on Thursday (1 August, 2013) by acclaimed children's author Jeremy Strong, who wrote titles including The Hundred-Mile-An-Hour Dog, Pirate Pandemonium and Living With Vampires.

Annie Owen, Service Delivery Manager for Wolverhampton Libraries, said: "We had a fantastic turnout and the young visitors had a great time listening to Jeremy talking about his books.

"This was one of a number of events which are taking place in our libraries during the Summer Reading Challenge. Children are encouraged to collect rewards, stickers and finally a medal to celebrate their success in reading books over the summer - this year's theme is Creepy House."

A number of sessions are still to take place. Beano illustrator Laura Howell will be holding 3 sessions tomorrow (Tuesday, 6 August), including at Ashmore Park Library from 11am, Low Hill Library at 12.30pm and Spring Vale Library at 2.30pm.

Local storyteller Peter Chand will be at Central Library from 11am on Friday 9 August, 2013, and at Whitmore Reans Library from 2pm to 3pm the same day. Performing poet Chris White will be entertaining children on Thursday 15 August, 2013, with sessions at Wednesfield Library at 11am and Warstones Library from 2.30pm.

Meanwhile there will be Creepy House themed events at Long Knowle and Collingwood libraries on Wednesday 21 August, 2013, from 10am to 12pm and 2pm to 4pm respectively, and Tettenhall and Whitmore Reans libraries on Friday 23 August, 2013, from 10am to 12pm and 2pm to 4pm respectively.

There will also be Creepy House drama sessions at Pendeford Library and East Park Library on Thursday 22 August, 2013, starting at 11am and 2.30pm.

Tickets are free but required for most events; please contact the respective library for details.
