Rising stars from handball will be showing off their skills at Aldersley Leisure Village in Wolverhampton after the sport's national association announced a string of fixtures in the city.

England Handball Association's under 18s squad is basing itself at Aldersley, and will host 8 national junior events between now and the end of April 2015.

Handball is played by 2 teams of 7 players - 6 outfield players and a goalkeeper - who attempt to pass and throw the ball into the goal of the other team. A standard match consists of two periods of 30 minutes, and the team that scores more goals wins.

As well as regular junior events, the under 18s will train at Aldersley throughout the season, while the England men and women squads are also expected to use the venue occasionally.

Councillor Elias Mattu, Wolverhampton City Council's Cabinet Member for Leisure and Communities, said: "I am delighted that we are welcoming the England Handball Association to use our excellent facilities at Aldersley Leisure Village.

"This is part of our drive to make our leisure centres more commercial, which in turn will enable us to improve the facilities we are able to offer to the people of Wolverhampton. It is also a great opportunity for local people to see for themselves some handball stars of the future in action and hopefully introduce more young people from Wolverhampton to the sport."

The National Junior Events take place at Aldersley Leisure Village on 28 September, 9, 21 and  26 October, 11 January, 22 February, 29 March and 26 April and spectators are welcome.

England Handball Association is the latest organisation to make a base at Aldersley Leisure Village, joining the likes of Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletics Club, Wolverhampton Wheelers and the Dwarf Athletics Association, which uses the facility for its annual World Dwarf Games.
