The council, through its waste and recycling partner Amey Plc, will take real trees only - not fake ones - during January.

The service will be free and all people need to do is put their tree out on their normal recycling day next to their bin on the kerbside.

Real tree collections will take place from Monday 11 January to Friday 22 January.

Bin crews will only be taking real Christmas trees and not any other garden waste.

Councillor Steve Evans, cabinet member for city environment, said: "We're very pleased to be able to provide a free real Christmas tree collection service for people once again in Wolverhampton.

"It is one less thing for people to worry about as we all get back to work in the New Year. All people need to do it put their real tree out on the kerbside on their normal recycling collection day between 11 January and 22 January.

"We would ask that people don't put their trees in the bin, just place it next to your bin out on the street. This will make it nice and easy for the crews to see it and take it away to be recycled.

"We would stress that this service is for real Christmas trees and not plastic ones."

Meanwhile, the council is reminding householders that bin crews will be working as normal apart from Christmas Day and Bank Holiday Monday (28 December).

For households that miss their collection dates on those days there will be extra collections on 1 January and 4 January. Excess waste can be put out on those extra collection days - recycling must be presented in clear or white open bags or open boxes.

All households have been sent a calendar advising them of collection dates, but people can easily find their next scheduled collection days on our Type=articles;Articleid=1;Title=website; and using the 'Find My Nearest' feature.
