Key priorities for the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Street Lighting Service include:

  • Maintaining a safe and reliable lighting network to support highway safety, public confidence, and community wellbeing.
  • Delivering targeted column replacement and investment programmes using lifecycle modelling, structural testing, and condition data to prioritise ageing and high-risk assets.
  • Improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions through the continued expansion of LED technology and smart lighting controls.
  • Applying resilient and risk-based maintenance principles to focus resources on critical assets and minimise service disruption.
  • Driving continuous improvement and innovation through the adoption of smart lighting technologies, enhanced asset data systems, and improved performance management.

The city’s street lighting portfolio currently includes:

  • Over 31,089 streetlights
  • 3,325 illuminated signs
  • 274 smart cells
  • 68 zebra crossings

As part of the Council’s wider energy management strategy, the successful LED conversion programme has significantly reduced energy consumption across the highway lighting network.

Following the success of the LED rollout, the next phase of the Street Lighting Strategy is the implementation of a Central Management System (CMS) across the network.

CMS technology will provide enhanced remote monitoring, automated fault detection, switching control, adaptive dimming profiles, and advanced energy management capabilities.

How do I report a street lighting fault?

You can use the Love Clean Streets app or Report a faulty street light online.
Please report these issues as soon as possible providing as much detail as possible. Include details such as the street light number, location, and description of the fault to help repair teams identify the issue quickly.

You can also report any faults or damage to:

  • Lamp columns
  • Guard rails
  • Street signs
  • Street name plates

The council is responsible for repair and maintenance of street name plates when this becomes necessary either due to accidental damage, vandalism or normal wear and tear.

  • Street furniture (Benches, Bollards, Cycle stands, Lit and unlit traffic signs)
  • Purple signs (Advance notice of Utility works signage)
