Course structure

School Direct (tuition fee) programmes allow you to learn on the job as you work towards your Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) recommendation. This non-salaried route is run by a school, or group of schools, that work closely with a university or school-centred initial teacher training (SCITT) consortium that certifies successful trainees. You’ll be based in a school, but will also be taught by the university, college, or SCITT that the school partners with.

Entry requirements
  • A degree awarded by a UK Higher Education institution or recognised alternative,  C/4 in GCSE Maths and English, also science if applying for primary. Pass in professional skills test. Some training providers may also have specific entry criteria.
  • DBS Check
Qualifications gained

QTS. While the majority of School Direct training programmes include a PGCE qualification, not all do.

Salary
  • N/A but you can apply for tuition fee and maintenance loans
  • Tax-free bursaries may also be available

The amount providers charge varies – for UK and EU students, it can be up to £9,250 per year for a full-time programme starting in 2018.

Elston Hall & St Bartholomew’s Teaching School Alliance

Elston Hall & St Bartholomew’s Teaching School Alliance is offering places on the School Direct (Tuition) route, in conjunction with the University of Birmingham. 

Across the academic year, you spend around 26 days at the university and the remainder of the time at three schools within our two Multi Academy Trusts. The schools are all based in Wolverhampton/South Staffordshire. Candidates will teach pupils across the 3-11 age range. Across the year, we will endeavour to ensure students experience schools of varying sizes/profiles and different year groups/Key Stages.
