Healthy Weight

Being a healthy weight means you're at less risk at developing preventable diseases such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Where to start?

A good place to start is to check your Body Mass Index measurement on NHS Choices. This will tell you if you are underweight, a healthy weight, overweight or obese.

It's also helpful to know your waist measurement. Carrying too much weight around your stomach can raise your risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke.

You can have a healthy BMI and still have excess tummy fat - meaning you're still at risk of developing these diseases.

To measure your waist:

  1. find the bottom of your ribs and the top of your hips
  2. wrap a tape measure around your waist midway between these points
  3. breathe out naturally before taking the measurement

Regardless of your height or BMI, you should try to lose weight if your waist is:

  • 94cm (37ins) or more (men)
  • 80cm (31.5ins) or more (women)

Many of us struggle with our weight and need a bit of extra support to get to lose weight and keep it off.

They will help you to make a plan to lose weight safely and you will learn ways to keep the weight off. They will help keep you on track by providing free tailored motivational support.
