The Wolverhampton Outreach Service are proud to offer support to the parents of children with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND) and those currently undergoing assessment.

Whether you are awaiting a diagnosis, have recently received a diagnosis or would like support with your child's changing needs, please get in touch.

All of our parent support is offered for free.

Coffee Mornings

These are opportunities to meet other parents/carers and get advice from professionals. Open to parents of children with any SEND need and those currently undergoing assessment.

Early Bird Plus

The Early Bird Plus programme is a fantastic 10 week programme from the National Autistic Society that aims to support the parents of Primary School aged (4-9 years) children with Autism.

Expertly delivered by staff from the Wolverhampton Outreach Service and Tettenhall Wood School, the programme supports parents in understanding their child's diagnosis, exploring how their child experiences Autism and in building a support network for now and the future.

Parents are encouraged to attend alongside professionals from their child's school, so that consistency can be established across both settings.

Parents that have previously attended the course said:

There is no charge for the Early Bird Plus Course.

Teen Life

Teen Life is a programme for the parents of teenagers with Autism.

Written by the National Autism Society and run by expert Autism practitioners from the Wolverhampton Outreach Service and Tettenhall Wood School, the programme aims to support parents in really understanding more about how autism is experienced by a teen with Autism. The 6 week course will help any parent or professional that attends to develop and understand useful strategies to support an individual with autism through their teenage years.

Topics covered include: stress and anxiety, spending time with others, self esteem, intense interests, understanding your diagnosis and puberty. We also spend lots of time discussing the personal difficulties faced by the individual teen and their family and the potential solutions to these problems.

Remote consultation service

The City of Wolverhampton Outreach Service has teamed up with the Inclusion Support Service to offer a free consultation service to parents/carers to help parents/carers to support their child(ren) during the school closures as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Parents/carers who feel that they would benefit from consultation with a member of our team can access the service. Our team comprises of the Educational Psychology Service- Educational Psychologists (EPs), Trainee EPs, Assistant EPs; Specialist Learning Support Service- Specialist Teachers; Officers who support with Education Welfare and the inclusion of vulnerable pupils; a Counsellor; and the Virtual School team, who promote the education of children and young people in care and previously in care. The Outreach Service comprises of Teachers and TLSAs and provide practical support to promote the learning of pupils with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).     
 
Parents/carers will be contacted remotely by your preferred method of communication and offered an initial consultation of up to 30 minutes with a member of our Inclusion Support Service or Outreach Service. You will also be offered another review consultation at a later date as a way of monitoring progress.  
 
Areas you may wish to discuss or explore with us could include: 

  • Impacts of transition from school to home learning; 
  • How do I support my child’s learning, social and emotional needs whilst they are at home; 
  • How do I promote positive behaviour; 
  • How do I support my child who is anxious or worried about the changes and implications of the coronavirus; 
  • How can I support children who may be missing friends and school staff; 
  • Impacts on family relationships; 
  • Promoting emotional wellbeing and positive mental health for my family;  
  • Supporting children or young people with uncertainty regarding endings e.g. children not returning to nursery, pupils in Year 6, Year 11 or Year 13.
