The government has announced a new fund to help with increased home energy costs. This will be a £150 rebate for eligible households. Payments will start in April 2022.

Find out if you are eligible

To be eligible:

  • you must be the liable person for council tax
  • the property must be in band A-D inclusive
  • the property must be your main home as of 1 April 2022

If your property is in band E and you are eligible for a disablement banding reduction, then you will also get the £150 payment. You can check your council tax band online.

Properties are not eligible if they are:

  • second homes
  • houses of multiple occupation (HMO)
  • unoccupied

You may be eligible for a payment from the Discretionary Fund, please see below for details and how to apply.

Getting your payment

The payments are non-taxable income. They will be disregarded as income in the calculation of any benefit entitlement.

If you pay your council tax by Direct Debit

You'll get an automatic payment to your bank account if the name on the bank account we have matches the name on the council tax bill. You do not need to take any action.

If you’re one of several residents who are jointly liable, we will make the payment into the live bank account that we have on record for the household. The bank account name must match one of the residents on the council tax bill.

If the bank account details do not match the council tax bill payer, you will need to follow the non-Direct Debit process below.

If you don’t pay your council tax by Direct Debit

You will need to tell us your bank details before we can make payment. You'll be able to do this by completing our online form.

We recommend that you have the  following information ready before you start to complete the form.

  • Council Tax Account Number – This can be found on your Council Tax Bill
  • A recent bank statement. The bank statement will need to be uploaded with your form
  • Property Reference – This can be located here Gov.UK website

We will also send a letter to all eligible properties.

If you want to use the payment to reduce your Council Tax

You will have the opportunity to receive the £150 as a reduction in your Council Tax rather than a direct payment by completing the form.

We recommend that you have the following information ready before you start to complete the form:

  • Council Tax Account Number - This can be found on your Council Tax Bill
  • Property Reference – This can be located here Gov.UK website

When you’ll receive your payment

Payments will begin in April 2022, after we’ve collected the first payment for 2022/23 council tax.  All payments will be completed by September 2022.

Changes in circumstances

The effective date for the council tax rebate is 1 April 2022. If there's a change to the council tax band of your home after this date, this will not be taken into consideration.

The exception to this is newly-built homes awaiting a valuation band. We can make a payment if:

  • the effective date is 1 April 2022 or before, and
  • you meet the eligibility criteria
