The introduction of the marriage schedule system

The Marriages, Civil Partnerships, Marriages and Deaths (Registration Etc.) Act 2019

The Act will modernise how marriages are registered for the first time since 1837.

This is by moving away from a paper marriage register to an electronic one. The new electronic register will be:

  • more secure
  • more efficient
  • easier to administer and update

The register will also include the mothers' names on the marriage entry and marriage certificates. Before, you could only include the fathers' name.

What will change?

Ceremonies at Our Venues and Approved Marriage and Civil Partnership Venues

  • On the day of the ceremony, couples will not sign a marriage register. Instead, you will sign a marriage schedule which is an A4 document.
  • Couples can include up to 4 parents in the schedule and their marriage certificate. I.e. Mother, Father, Stepmother and Stepfather.
  • Couples will not receive marriage certificates on the day of the marriage. The Registration office will process and post out the certificate to the couple. They will do this within a specified timescale
