When the natural parents of a child get married or form a civil partnership, the birth should be re-registered to show that they are a child of the marriage / civil partnership. This process creates a new birth record replacing the previous one, and any future certificates will be issued from the new registration.
To apply you must:
- Complete form LA1 (one form per child)
- Provide original birth certificate of the child(ren)
- Provide your original marriage or original civil partnership certificate
Note: Photocopies are not acceptable
If you were married abroad, then the register office will send your documents to General Register Office for approval.
Once all documents are received, the Register Office will contact you to arrange an in-person re-registration appointment. Either or both parents can attend the appointment. There is no charge for the appointment or the re-registration. Updated birth certificates can be purchased at the appointment.
