Civil Partnerships

The Civil Partnerships (Opposite-sex Couples) Regulations 2019, extended eligibility for forming civil partnerships to opposite sex couples. A civil partnership is formed when a couple sign a document in the presence of a civil partnership registrar and two witnesses. No ceremony is required, but couples may choose to say some simple words alongside the legal signing. The cost is the same whether you hold a ceremony or just attend with your witnesses to sign the schedule.

Converting civil partnership to marriage for same-sex couples

In 2014 the government implemented the Marriage of Same Sex Couples (Conversion of Civil Partnership) Regulations, which has enabled same-sex couples who had entered into a civil partnership to convert this to a marriage, if they wish.

The conversion can take place in Wolverhampton, provided the civil partnership took place within England or Wales.

Once the civil partnership is converted to a marriage the civil partnership ends, and the couple are treated as having been married since the date that they originally formed their civil partnership.

If you wish to convert your civil partnership into a marriage you have the option of a standard conversion appointment at the register office, or through a two-stage procedure where you can have a ceremony at an approved venue of your choice, following the appointment at the register office. The two stages do not need to be completed on the same day.

Please call us on 01902 551234 if you wish to book an appointment.

There is currently no provision in law for opposite-sex couples to convert their civil partnership to marriage, or for any couples to convert marriage to civil partnership.

Religious ceremonies

If you are planning to marry in a Church of England or Church of Wales premises, you must first discuss your marriage with the vicar. If he or she can marry you then they will advise you on the ceremony, the time scales and the necessary legal requirements including publishing Banns of the marriage, or for the issue of common licence. You won’t need to contact your local Register Office.

If your legal marriage is taking place in a religious building that isn't a Church of England or Wales premises, then you will need to give formal Notice of Marriage at your local Register Office, once you have arranged your ceremony date, as soon as possible, but no earlier than one year before your ceremony date.

Baby naming ceremony

A naming ceremony is the perfect way to celebrate the birth of a new baby, or the joining of a new family. Naming ceremonies can take place within the Register Office or at any approved premises within the city. Ceremonies can be personalised with poems, readings, and personalised promises which can be made by parents, grandparents or chosen friends.

Renewal of vows

A Renewal of Vows ceremony is a wonderful way to celebrate your marriage. You can renew your vows at any stage of married life, or as a way to commemorate a special anniversary. A Renewal of Vows ceremony is also a great way to celebrate with family and friends after a marriage abroad.
