Enjoying the local canal network

To help you get the most out of your time on Wolverhampton's canals, Waterscape have produced a series of canal guides for walkers and cyclists. A wider regional guide for the Midlands is also available.

Disabled access

The Birmingham Main Line Canal from Coseley to Aldersley Junction via Horseley Fields Basin has a towing path suitable for wheelchair access.

If you wish to use the towpath use your RADAR key to operate access gates.

Angling and fishing

Angling and fishing information can be found within the Waterscape guides to local canals

Each guide give details about obtaining a fishing permit, fish stocks and environmental management.

When on the canal, please observe the Waterways Code for angling and fishing.

Cycling

To assist cyclists and help promote cycling as a leisure activity, British Waterways have produced the Waterscape Cycling web pages. They offer a wealth of information to help you get the most out of your day. 

Wolverhampton offers many miles of towpath suitable for leisurely cycling, however surfaces can vary from tarmac and brick to loose gravel and mud. A list of cyclable towpaths is available from the Waterscape website.

When on the towpath, be sure to obersve the Waterways Code for Cyclists.

Permit to cycle

Before cycling on a towpath owned by British Waterways, you will need to download a special cycle permit, and display it on your bike.
