Canals

Wolverhampton has inherited a large network of narrow canals which is owned and managed by British Waterways.

Most of canals, cuttings and tunnels were built during the Industrial Revolution for transporting goods and materials to centres of commerce and ports.

Constructed between the 1770's and 1830's, over 100 of canal miles still survive in the West Midlands. Today they are mainly used for leisure purposes and many disused sections are being restored.

With the increasing popularity of urban waterside locations, the Canalside Quarter of Wolverhampton is being restored and regenerated under an Area Plan as a modern and exciting place to live and work.
