Advice for motorcyclists
In order to stay safe on the roads, motorcyclists can take a number of precautions to protect themselves from injury whilst on their bikes.
Firstly, ride defensively. Defensive riding is based on good observation and anticipation. It's all about recognising potential problems and always questioning what other road users may or may not do.
Secondly, be seen. Other road users may look, but fail to see everything around them. In daylight wear bright or fluorescent clothing and use dipped headlights. In the dark wear bright reflective clothing and ride with dipped headlights, unless you need to use full beam.
Thirdly, keep your bike in good condition. Without routine attention and maintenance, your bike will soon get into a dangerous condition.
Always wear protective clothing. Protective headgear is a must. Every rider on a two wheeled motor vehicle, except a side car passenger, must wear a proper motorcycle helmet marked as complying with an appropriate British (BS) or European (CE) standard.
Protect you eyes by wearing goggles or a visor, remember they cannot be replaced.
Whilst finally always wear suitable clothing. Road surfaces have to be rough to prevent vehicles from skidding. This is fine when you are riding, but not so good if you come off your bike. To protect yourself always wear good quality gloves and boots. Remember to protect your body as well.
Advice for drivers
Motorcyclists are far more difficult to spot. Remember to look carefully when you are turning left and before you turn right. Motorcyclists can be hidden easily by parked cars, large vehicles, and even your own vehicle. Remember to look carefully for motorcyclists at roundabouts.
