Smestow Valley Leisure Ride

An easy leisure ride which is 95% traffic free and suitable for inexperienced adults and children of all ages. The route is largely unsurfaced and a mountain type bike is required.

Route

The route starts and finishes at Aldersley Leisure Village where facilities include a large car park, toilets, changing rooms and refreshments.

The trail then follows the disused railway track past Wombourne Station and returns along the canal towpath via Bratch Locks.

Section by section guide

  • From the car park at Aldersley Leisure ride back towards the main entrance on Aldersley Road. Turn left along the disused railway track. From this point the route is traffic free to Wombourne station.
  • At Wombourne Station leave the track and join the station driveway on your left handside. At the end of the driveway turn right onto the road. Some caution is needed as the road is narrow at this point.
  • After a short distance the road will take you to a narrow humped back bridge at Bratch Locks, providing access to the Staffs and Worcester canal. Cross the road and walk with your bike through the lock area.
  • The canal towpath will lead you back to the Meccano bridge at Compton, where you will rejoin the disused rail track. Head north retracing your route back to Aldersley Leisure Village.
