Cycling route features
Advanced cycle stop lines
These are placed at traffic signalled junctions, they have two sets of stop lines. The first stop line is for general traffic, and the second stop line is for cyclists. This is to give space for cyclists to make any necessary manoeuvre as they pull away from the traffic signals.
Examples of advanced stop lines can be found at the junction of Park Lane/Cannock Road, and Hordern Road/Craddock Street.
Contra-flow cycle lanes
A contra-flow cycle lane lets a cyclist travel against the direction of flow of the one-way street in safety, and helps maintain a more convenient and direct route for cyclists.
Examples of these can be found in Worcester Street, and Old Hall Street.
Toucan Signals
These are special traffic signal controlled crossings - they have a red man and green man to show when it is safe to cross - but they also have an extra signal, a green cycle. This means that cyclists need not dismount, but can cross over at the same time as pedestrians.
Toucan crossings are the only controlled crossings which do not require cyclists to dismount, and should have cycle lanes on the approach to and from the crossing.
