Cycling do's and don'ts

Do's

You can cycle:

  • On bridleways and byways, but you must give way to walkers and horse riders
  • On canal towpaths, but check, as some canals require a British Waterways Permit – it’s free! To check or download your free permit visit the British Waterways website or phone 01923 201120
  • On cycle tracks and bus lanes if the lane signs include a cycle symbol.

Don'ts

You cannot cycle:

  • On a pavement or footpath unless there are signs to tell you to
  • On open land without the permission of the landowner
  • In bus lanes which do not display a cycle route sign.

Highway Code

For information about highway rules and regulations, see the Highway Code.
