Future Midland Metro routes

There are exciting plans to extend the Midland Metro system across the conurbation. The projects are promoted by Centro the West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive on behalf of the Passenger Transport Authority and the West Midlands Districts.

The proposed extensions are:

Birmingham City Centre Extension.

This a proposal to extend Metro Line 1 from its present terminus at Snow Hill across Birmingham City Centre via New Street Station, Victoria Square and Broad Street passed the Symphony Hall and Brindley Place to Five Ways Edgbaston. A public inquiry was held into this extension in December 2003. If approved it could be operational before 2010.

Wednesbury to Brierley Hill

This is a proposal to provide a new metro line to serve Dudley and the Merry Hill shopping complex with Metro Line 1 at Wednesbury. A public inquiry into this proposal is expected to be completed by April 2004 and if approved could be operational before 2010.

Future Proposals

The West Midlands Passenger Transport Authority has approved consultation and development of a further 60kms of Metro Routes. These are :

  • Wolverhampton to Walsall and Wednesbury  - the 5Ws route
  • Birmingham to Great Barr - Varsity Route north route.
  • Birmingham to Quinton - Hagley Road route
  • Birmingham along the Coventry Road - the Airport Route.

With the on-going development, it is expected that they could start to be operational after 2011.
