Railway safety
Many organisations are responsible for safety on the railways in Britain.
The following provides a brief summary of roles and responsibilities.
Network Rail
Replacing Railtrack, Network Rail is a not-for-profit company responsible for repairing and maintaining Britain's rail network and infrastructure.
Health and Safety Executive
The Health and Safety Executive responsible for independently checking and inspecting the safety of passengers and workers on the railway.
Part for the Executive, Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Railways is responsible for ensuring that new track and trains meet safety standards, and for investigating serious collisions and derailments.
Safety investigations and performance
British Transport Police
Dedicated force for ensuring and policing the safety of travelling passengers, staff and infrastructure.
Safety awareness
A number of organisations are working in partnership to reduce fatalities on Britain's railways, especially through trespass.
