Teaching road safety through Personal, Social and Health Education
Who is this information for?
The information and support listed below is available for all teachers in schools in Wolverhampton. In addition we have free information for parents which can be distributed to support the valuable work done within the school.
How can it help?
The resources and information can be used to help teachers working within the framework of the DfES Curriculum Guidance for PSHE and Citizenship and / or the National Curriculum core or non-core foundation subjects.
Why should we include road safety in curriculum work?
"Personal , Social, and Health Education (PSHE) and Citizenship helps to give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives and to become informed, active and responsible citizens". (DfES)
It is important that pupils understand important road safety messages and acquire the skills and knowledge they need in order to live fulfilled lives. A pupil with excellent qualifications at age 18 years will still need the skills to cross the road safely for him/her to take their place in society. Parents have a key role to play in ensuring their child is shown good examples of road behaviour, but sadly as more children are taken to school by car we find that accidents increase after the age of eleven when pupils begin to make independent journeys. This is because often they have not acquired basic road safety skills whilst walking to primary schools with their parents.
