School travel plans

A school travel plan puts together a series of measures to improve safety and reduce car use on journeys to and from school.

Working with the local authority school travel advisor, and Road Safety Team, an effective plan can be developed. During the process, consultations take place with teachers, parents, pupils, governors and local residents on how they would like the plan to look.

Every school travel plan should contain the following elements:

  • A brief description of the school's location, size, and type.
  • The travel and transport problems facing the school, the times these affect the school, and the length of the journeys.
  • A survey to identify current modes of travel and how the children would like to travel.
  • Clearly defined targets and objectives.
  • Proposed measures of change.
  • Evidence of consultation.
  • Responsibilities.
  • Timetable of implementation.
  • Monitoring and review process.
