Child training
The development of practical skills is an invaluable aid to children's road safety, and is an accepted means of achieving casualty reduction.
Cycle training
The Road Safety Unit has for many years provided schools with cyclist training free of charge for children aged ten or over. Each year well over 1,000 children, helped by a team of dedicated instructors, gain a valuable insight into what is required to cycle safely.
Pedestrian training
We have also recently begun to offer practical pedestrian training to schools. Again delivered by a team of instructors, children are taught practically at the roadside, the skills which will enable them to cross safely.
The Road Safety Unit delivers this training using the Stepping Out with Togo and Nogo Scheme. The training is offered to all Year 3 children across the city.

School crossing patrol visits
As part of our road safety education package we offer schools the opportunity of a visit by a real life patrol.
The visit takes the form of a classroom talk, role play, and song which are used to develop pupil understanding of school crossing patrols and how to cross the road safely with them.
Prior to the hour long session the children get the opportunity to use the school crossing patrol resource box.
The resource box contains activities which promote road safety and Green Cross Code messages through play.
The volunteers who deliver the sessions are actual school crossing patrols who have received specific training. All the children are given a sticker and fun leaflet at the end of the session.
