How potholes form
A pothole is where the surface of the road or footway has failed and a hollow has formed.
Potholes can be caused by:
- the action of heavy vehicles repeatedly putting the road surface under stress
- the work of public utility companies (e.g. electricity, gas, water and phone) disturbing road or pavement surfacing
- the combined action of sun, frost and rain.
Potholes pose a danger to road users and pedestrians alike with increase risk of vehicle damage and injury. If left, potholes can deteriorate, increase in size and affect other parts for the road surface.
Most potholes can be simply 'patched' with Tarmac however larger, deeper potholes may require more significant work.
