Private pavements and roads
The Council is not responsible for the maintenance and repair of private (unadopted) roads and pavements.
Roads that are unadopted are generally in a condition not meeting the standard of adopted roads. Unadopted pavements and roads usually have no bitumin surface or use setts (cobbles).
The responsibility for private pavements and roads lies with the street owner(s). In most cases this is usually the people who live on the street.
How do I report a problem on a private pavement or road that is unsafe?
While maintenance of the pavement or road is usually the responsibility of the street owner(s), if the problem is thought to be a 'danger', the Council can arrange to make safe by placing barriers or road closures around the hazard.
If you find a problem on a private road that is dangerous, for example a gully grate or manhole cover is missing, the Council will arrange to make it safe. The owner(s) of the will need to make permanent remedials.
Making a report
If the pavement or road is unadopted, please ensure you tell us this when you make a report.
