Red routes

Red routes are a new way of improving the flow of traffic, increasing the reliability of journeys, improving both road safety and the environment, as well as making travel better for everyone on the roads.

They work by putting a stop to delays caused by inconsiderate parking and stopping.

Red routes use a package of measures to improve safe traffic flow. The most obvious of these measures are the red lines along the road edge, and the clearway signs which are a clear signal to drivers to say "no stopping".

Red routes are not blanket "no stopping" restrictions. They include better provision for legal parking and loading. Parking areas for people with special needs and loading bays for delivery drivers are clearly marked.

Road users will recognise a red route by the red lines on the road surface, so you can know where you can and can't stop.

Red-bordered signs on the side of the road will tell you where you can't stop and the restrictions that apply.

Examples of red route signage and markings can be found on the Highway Code website.

If you would like any more information on red routes, please contact Transportation Development on 01902 551155, alternatively you can e-mail us as road.safety@wolverhampton.gov.uk
