Winter driving
Planning a journey
General advice for drivers planning a journey in cold conditions.
- Check the conditions before you venture out and take heed of police or weather warnings in the interest of your own safety
- SLOW DOWN - It takes much longer to stop in icy conditions, so allow plenty of room to slow down and stop. Remember, ice may still be present on a gritted road
- If you find yourself behind a gritter, please keep well back, be patient and wait for it to turn off. Don’t try to overtake
- Please remember, when you are driving that we do not grit all roads. In heavy snow please be patient
- Don’t leave vehicles where they will obstruct the free passage of maintenance vehicles
- Ensure your vehicle is well maintained. Add anti-freeze to the radiator and winter additive to the windscreen washer bottles; make sure your wipers are in good condition; check tyres have plenty of tread depth and are maintained at the correct pressure
- Hail, rain and heavy snow reduce visibility; use dipped headlights and reduce your speed.
Stay safe on the roads this winter
Winter weather makes driving dangerous - but you can stay safe with these tips from the Think! Road Safety Winter Driving safety campaign and the Highways Agency:
- In winter, our weather can change quickly. If there is severe weather don't travel unless your journey is essential. If you must drive, always be prepared for bad weather.
- Plan your journey. Check your route for delays and check the weather forecast. While you are driving listen to travel news on the radio. Information about current road conditions is on the Highways Agency website
- In case you get stuck, keep these things in your car:
- Warm clothes
- Food and water
- Boots
- De-icer Torch
- Spade
- Take care around gritters and vehicles that clear snow. Only overtake them if you can do so safely and without going on to uncleared snow.
- It can take ten times longer to stop when it is icy, so allow more room to slow down and stop.
- To avoid losing control of your car because of wheel spin, use the highest gear that you can. Avoid sudden braking, acceleration and sharp turns.
