Which roads do we grit?

Resources do not allow all roads to be treated, so we have to decide which roads are priorities.

Priority system

A priority gritting system is used in Wolverhampton based on guidance and recommendations that are used by most local councils.

Our gritted network is divided into two priorities:

Priority 1 Roads

Consists of the principle roads, which form the backbone of the road network in the City.

Priority 2 Roads

Includes other roads that are an essential part of Wolverhampton's network and have heavy traffic.

Precautionary salting

We carry out precautionary salting to around 465km of roads (approximately 62% of all roads in Wolverhampton).

Exceptional salting

When severe weather conditions persist and then only when all priority routes have been fully and adequately treated and resources become available will routes that are not Priority 1 and 2 and footways will be treated.
