Road and pathway maintenance

As Highway Authority the Council is responsible for:

  • maintenance, improvement and repair of the public highway and footway surfaces as well as street lights, traffic lights, highway drains, signs and safety barriers
  • regulation and enforcement of all activities in, on, or close to the highway
  • routine maintenance of highway assets, including winter gritting operations.

Transportation Network Management is part of the Regeneration and Transportation Service group and undertakes these responsibilities on behalf of the City Council.

The group spends over £10 million a year looking after the highway network and associated infrastructure, all managed by a team of professional and technical staff.

The actual work on site is generally carried out on behalf of the Council by private contractors, and our role is to direct, co-ordinate and supervise the work in a way the ensures 'best value' for the City.

A Highway Maintenance Policy and Strategy document that details the manner in which these vital assets are managed and the standards that will be upheld in doing so is produced by the City Council and is reviewed annually.
