Structural Repairs to Lyndale Drive Culvert, Wednesfield, Wolverhampton.

Scheme Overview

Council Engineers identified during routine structural inspections that the culvert to the front of 97/99 Lyndale Drive beneath the carriageway had deteriorated. This initiated further investigation work, which found the concrete deck of the culvert to be cracked and dislodged in several areas.

The most economical solution is to replace the concrete deck, rather than carry out continuing isolated repairs. This will increase the life span of the culvert and reduce further periods of disruption to residents. This work will be undertaken by Parade Civil Engineering on behalf of the Council. The planned start date is Monday 19th February with an anticipated completion by 24th May 2024.

Scheme Details

The first phase of the work will involve diverting underground utility services, such as water and electricity. This will enable the safe removal of the old concrete deck and no disruption to services are expected.

The second stage will involve removing the old concrete deck. During this time, you may experience some noise disturbance, as high-pressure air compressors and excavators will be used to break out and remove the existing damaged structure.

The equipment we will have on site is some of the quietest on the market, and we will also position it away from properties to further reduce noise where possible. Inevitably there will be some noise disturbance when we remove the existing concrete deck. We apologise for the disturbance and will aim to complete all noisy work during the daytime as quickly as possible.

The third phase will involve installing the new concrete deck. This will arrive pre-cast from the factory and will need to be positioned into place using heavy lifting equipment. The affected road and footways will then be resurfaced.

Traffic and Parking Restrictions

To carry out the works safely, the section of Lyndale Drive, between its junctions with Westport Crescent will be closed and unpassable by vehicle. The signed diversion route will be via Lichfield Road, Lakefield Road, Waddensbrook Lane, Silverton Way and vice versa. Pedestrian access will be maintained. For safety reasons it may be necessary during some phases of the work to divert pedestrians, a suitable diversion route will be in place.

On street parking near the works area will be restricted, as access will be required for plant and equipment. Please do not park in the areas where cones or barriers have been placed.

Access to properties

The Council will try to ensure that access to properties is maintained. We will notify residents should access be restricted or cannot be maintained to your property.

Please note adverse weather conditions can delay works, so we will ensure that the latest information is here available on the City Council’s website.

Site Safety

It is important to note the culvert will still be connected to an open watercourse up-stream and will contain running water, which may be visible at times. Parade Civil Engineering will ensure that all excavations and equipment are protected with safety fencing.

Please do not enter areas which have been enclosed with safety fencing, and refrain from speaking to site staff who are actively operating machinery. If you have small children, please make them aware of the works and the dangers of entering or playing near construction sites.

If you notice anything unsafe, please let us know, or if safe to do so, inform staff working on site. Site staff will be on hand to assist with any difficulties you may have.
